Ophiopogonis Radix fructan-selenium nanoparticles (ORP-SeNPs) are research-stage, polysaccharide-functionalized inorganic nanoparticles developed for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. The compound consists of elemental selenium nanoparticles stabilized and capped by fructan-type polysaccharides derived from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb *Ophiopogonis Radix*. Prepared via a redox reaction between sodium selenite and ascorbic acid, ORP-SeNPs function as a colon-targeted drug delivery system. Their therapeutic effects are mediated through the modulation of gut microbiota homeostasis, as well as intrinsic anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor activities. The research was published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules in 2025 by a team of academic researchers.
