Overview

Opipram (opipramol dihydrochloride) is a tricyclic antidepressant and anxiolytic marketed by Krewel Meuselbach. Unlike traditional tricyclic antidepressants that primarily inhibit the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, opipramol acts as a high-affinity agonist at Sigma-1 receptors and a ligand for Sigma-2 receptors. It also exhibits antagonistic activity at histamine H1 receptors and lower affinity for dopamine D2, serotonin 5-HT2, and alpha-1 adrenergic receptors. This unique pharmacological profile makes it effective for treating generalized anxiety disorder, somatoform disorders, and depressive episodes associated with anxiety. It is formulated as film-coated tablets in 50 mg and 100 mg strengths for oral administration.
