opium tincture

**Opium tincture** is an oral hydroalcoholic pharmaceutical preparation of opium, also called laudanum, standardized in U.S. deodorized products to contain 10 mg/mL anhydrous morphine equivalent. It is a Schedule II opioid preparation used as a nonspecific antidiarrheal; opioid agonism in the gastrointestinal tract increases intestinal smooth-muscle tone and suppresses propulsive contractions, thereby reducing stool frequency and fluid loss. U.S. labeling identifies diarrhea as its indication. Opium tincture has also been studied in Iran as opioid agonist treatment for opioid use disorder and was investigated by Marathon Pharmaceuticals in Phase 3 studies of chronic diarrhea associated with short bowel syndrome.
