OPM cells (Autonomous Regulatory Monocytes) are an autologous cell therapy developed for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers and the prevention of critical limb ischemia (CLI). These cells are derived from monocytes extracted from the patient's own peripheral blood and cultured in vitro with specific cytokines. This process endows the monocytes with the capability to promote angiogenesis and tissue repair. When administered via intramuscular injection around the site of a diabetic ulcer, OPM cells function through paracrine signaling, increasing the secretion of proteins associated with vascular regeneration and tissue recovery. Furthermore, they are designed to activate dormant or suppressed precursor cells, including tissue-oriented stem cells, to replace and reconstruct damaged tissues. The therapy is being evaluated in clinical studies initiated by Shanghai East Hospital in collaboration with Van der Rijt (Shanghai) Biotechnology.
