OPNT001

OPNT001 is a nasal spray formulation of naloxone, a competitive opioid antagonist, developed by Opiant Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of bulimia nervosa (BN). The drug's development was based on the hypothesis that binge eating behavior is driven by an addiction-like mechanism involving the brain's opioid system. By blocking opioid receptors, particularly the mu-opioid receptor, OPNT001 was intended to reduce the reward associated with binging and thus decrease the frequency of binging episodes. Despite showing a favorable safety profile in clinical studies, a Phase 2 trial failed to meet its primary endpoint of reducing the number of binging days compared to baseline, leading to the discontinuation of the program in 2019.
