Opokan

Opokan is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) developed and marketed by the Polish pharmaceutical company Aflofarm. Its active ingredient is meloxicam, a small molecule that acts as a preferential inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) over cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1). By inhibiting these enzymes, Opokan reduces the production of prostaglandins, which are key mediators of inflammation, pain, and fever. It is indicated for the short-term treatment of acute exacerbations of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, as well as for the management of musculoskeletal pain such as back and joint pain. Opokan was notably the first meloxicam-based product to be made available over-the-counter (OTC) at a 7.5 mg dose, while a 15 mg strength is also available for prescription use.
