OpRegen (RG6501) is an allogeneic retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell therapy currently in Phase 2a clinical development for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The therapy consists of human embryonic stem cell-derived RPE cells that are delivered via subretinal injection to replace or support the damaged RPE layer in patients with GA. By restoring the RPE layer, OpRegen aims to preserve the overlying photoreceptors and prevent further vision loss. The program was originally developed by Lineage Cell Therapeutics and its subsidiary Cell Cure Neurosciences, and is now being advanced through a worldwide collaboration with Roche and Genentech. It has received Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation from the FDA.
