Overview

Oprelvekin is a recombinant form of human interleukin-11 (IL-11), a pleiotropic cytokine and thrombopoietic growth factor. It functions by binding to the IL-11 receptor complex, which triggers a signaling cascade that stimulates the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and megakaryocyte progenitor cells, as well as the maturation of megakaryocytes. This process ultimately leads to an increase in peripheral platelet production. Oprelvekin is primarily indicated for the prevention of severe thrombocytopenia and the reduction of the need for platelet transfusions following myelosuppressive chemotherapy in patients with non-myeloid malignancies. In clinical research led by Fudan University, it is being compared against recombinant human thrombopoietin (rhTPO) for managing thrombocytopenia in patients with recurrent colorectal cancer receiving radiotherapy.
