Overview

OPS-2071 is a novel, orally administered fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical. It is characterized by low oral absorption, which reduces the risk of systemic adverse events typical of fluoroquinolones. OPS-2071 exhibits a dual mechanism of action with both potent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity—particularly against intestinal pathogens such as *Clostridioides difficile*—and significant anti-inflammatory effects, including immunosuppressive activity and attenuation of cytokines like TNF-alpha. This makes it a promising candidate for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The drug acts primarily as a DNA gyrase inhibitor.
