Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Optate is an investigational inhaled medication designed to safely raise airway surface pH and intracellular pH. This mechanism of action has been shown to inhibit the replication of respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), by preventing viral activation and decreasing viral replication. It also inhibits the expression of major endosomal trafficking genes, which contributes to its antiviral effects. Optate is being investigated as a potential treatment for COVID-19 and RSV, with studies suggesting it could reduce symptom length and disease severity. It has been well tolerated in healthy human subjects during a Phase 2a safety trial.
