Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Optilume BPH is a minimally invasive, drug-device combination product designed for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Developed by Urotronic and acquired by Laborie Medical Technologies, the system consists of a pre-dilation catheter and a drug-coated balloon (DCB) catheter. The procedure involves transurethral insertion of the balloon catheter into the prostatic urethra, where mechanical inflation achieves an anterior commissurotomy to separate the lateral lobes of the prostate. Concurrently, the balloon delivers a localized dose of paclitaxel, an antiproliferative agent that binds to the tubulin beta chain to inhibit cell division and scar tissue formation. This prevents re-fusion of the lobes and maintains long-term urethral patency without the need for permanent implants, cutting, or thermal ablation.
