Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Optimel Manuka is an over-the-counter ophthalmic solution formulated for the temporary relief of burning and irritation due to dryness of the eye. Its primary active ingredient is glycerin (0.2%), which acts as a lubricant. The formulation also contains pharmaceutical-grade honey derived from Leptospermum species (commonly known as manuka honey), sodium benzoate, sodium chloride, and water[1][5][7]. The product leverages the natural antibacterial properties of manuka honey—specifically its methylglyoxal content—to reduce bacterial colonization on the eyelid margin, thereby helping to stabilize tear film quality and reduce inflammation associated with dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction[2][4][8]. Clinical studies have shown that regular application can significantly reduce colony-forming units (CFUs) on eyelids in patients with dry eye or meibomian gland disease, potentially lowering susceptibility to bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis while improving symptoms such as sore or irritated eyes[2][4]. Developed by Melcare Biomedical in Australia since 2015, it is available in both drop (daytime) and gel (nighttime) formulations[6].
