Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Optimyxin is a topical antibiotic combination product developed and marketed by Euro-Pharm International Canada Inc. for the treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the eye and ear. The formulation contains two active ingredients: polymyxin B sulfate and gramicidin. Polymyxin B sulfate is a polypeptide antibiotic that targets Gram-negative bacteria by binding to lipopolysaccharides and phospholipids in the bacterial cell membrane, leading to membrane disruption and cell death. Gramicidin is a linear polypeptide antibiotic that acts primarily against Gram-positive bacteria by forming cation-selective channels in the lipid bilayer, which disrupts the essential ion gradient of the cell. Optimyxin is available as an over-the-counter (OTC) ophthalmic and otic solution in Canada, indicated for conditions such as bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, and external ear infections.
