Optive Plus

Optive Plus is a multi-action artificial tear formulation developed by Allergan (now AbbVie) for the treatment of dry eye disease (DED). It is a lipid-containing emulsion that combines the lubricating properties of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and glycerin with the osmoprotective effects of L-carnitine and erythritol. A key feature of the formulation is the inclusion of highly pure castor oil, delivered via a polysorbate-80 micellar system, which replenishes the tear film's lipid layer to reduce tear evaporation. The product is specifically designed to address hyperosmolarity and lipid deficiency, making it particularly effective for patients with evaporative dry eye or mixed-deficiency dry eye. It is typically preserved with PURITE, which breaks down into natural tear components upon contact with the eye.
