Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Opuntia ficus-indica cladode extract is a botanical extract derived from the flat, pad-like stem segments (cladodes) of the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus (prickly pear). Rich in bioactive phytochemicals including flavonoids, polyphenols, water-binding polysaccharides, and piscidic acid, the extract exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. In preclinical models, it has been shown to mitigate oxidative stress, reduce neuroinflammation, and protect against manganese-induced neurotoxicity and Parkinsonian-like motor and cognitive deficits. Additionally, it is widely utilized in cosmetic formulations for its skin-soothing, hydrating, and barrier-protecting effects, where it acts by blocking the release of stress mediators from sensory nerve cells.
