OPX-212 is an autologous T-cell immunotherapy developed for the treatment of neuromyelitis optica (NMO), a rare autoimmune disorder in which immune system cells and antibodies attack myelin in the optic nerves and spinal cord, leading to demyelination and axonal loss. The therapy is specifically tailored to each patient’s immune response against aquaporin-4, the primary antigen implicated in NMO. Using Opexa Therapeutics’ proprietary ImmPath technology, aquaporin-4 reactive T-cells (ARTCs) are collected from a patient's blood, expanded, attenuated by irradiation, and then reintroduced into the patient with the goal of inducing a regulatory immune response that reduces or regulates pathogenic ARTCs. This approach aims to decrease clinical relapses and slow disability progression by restoring immune tolerance while leaving other aspects of immunity intact[1][3][5][6].
