Overview

Oracea is a branded, once-daily oral capsule formulation of doxycycline designed specifically for the treatment of inflammatory lesions (papules and pustules) of rosacea in adult patients. Each capsule contains 40 mg of anhydrous doxycycline as a combination of 30 mg immediate-release and 10 mg delayed-release beads. Unlike higher-dose doxycycline used for infections, Oracea is formulated at a sub-antimicrobial dose that provides anti-inflammatory effects without significant antibacterial activity or risk of promoting bacterial resistance. Its mechanism involves inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases and other inflammatory mediators implicated in rosacea pathogenesis. Oracea does not treat the erythematous (redness), telangiectatic, or ocular components of rosacea and has not been evaluated for use beyond 16 weeks efficacy or safety beyond nine months[1][4][5][8].
