Orafang (Pharmbio Korea Inc.)

PBK-1701TC, marketed under the brand name Orafang, is an oral sulfate tablet (OST) formulation developed by PharmBio Korea for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy. It is a combination product containing anhydrous sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and 320 mg of simethicone. The sulfate salts function as osmotic laxatives, increasing the water content in the intestinal lumen to promote bowel evacuation. Simethicone is included as an anti-foaming agent to reduce intraluminal gas bubbles, thereby enhancing mucosal visibility during the colonoscopic examination. PBK-1701TC was designed to improve patient compliance and tolerability compared to traditional large-volume liquid oral sulfate solutions (OSS), delivering approximately 90% of the salt and water load of standard OSS in a more palatable tablet form. In Phase 3 clinical trials, PBK-1701TC demonstrated non-inferior bowel-cleansing efficacy to liquid OSS with significantly improved patient satisfaction and fewer adverse events such as nausea and vomiting. It was approved for use in South Korea in 2019.
