Overview
Oral capsule faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a microbiome-based therapeutic intervention developed by Tan Tock Seng Hospital. It involves the oral administration of capsules containing processed healthy donor stool from a stool bank. The primary mechanism of action is the restoration of a diverse and functional intestinal microbiota, which provides colonization resistance against multidrug-resistant organisms. Specifically, it is intended to decolonize carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) from the gastrointestinal tract of colonized patients, thereby reducing the risk of subsequent clinical infection and transmission. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial for intestinal CPE decolonization.
