Overview

Oral moisturizing jelly (OMJ) is an edible saliva substitute developed by the Dental Innovation Foundation under Royal Patronage (DIF) in Thailand. It is specifically designed to alleviate symptoms of xerostomia (dry mouth) and improve swallowing ability (dysphagia) in patients with radiation-induced hyposalivation, such as head and neck cancer survivors. Unlike many topical saliva substitutes, OMJ is formulated to be swallowed, providing lubrication from the oral cavity through the oropharynx. Its composition includes water, phosphate buffers, carboxymethylcellulose, gelatin, glycerol, and xanthan gum. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in improving subjective and objective dry mouth scores, swallowing times, and nutritional status in post-radiotherapy patients and elderly individuals with comorbidities like hypertension and diabetes.
