The live attenuated poliomyelitis vaccine, commonly known as the oral polio vaccine (OPV), is a biologic preparation used to induce immunity against poliomyelitis. It consists of weakened (attenuated) strains of the poliovirus, typically the Sabin strains (Types 1, 2, and 3). Upon oral administration, the vaccine viruses replicate in the intestinal mucosa, stimulating the production of secretory IgA and systemic IgG antibodies, thereby providing both individual protection and reducing community transmission. The specific version developed by the Institute of Medical Biology at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences utilizes human diploid cells (HDC) for viral cultivation, an approach designed to enhance product purity and safety compared to traditional monkey kidney cell-derived vaccines.
