Fanolyte (often spelled Fanolite) is an oral rehydration solution (ORS) developed and marketed by Bioprojet. It is specifically formulated for the nutritional management of dehydration in infants and young children suffering from acute diarrhea or vomiting. The solution contains a balanced concentration of glucose and electrolytes, including sodium chloride, potassium citrate, and citric acid. Its mechanism of action relies on the sodium-glucose cotransport system (SGLT1) in the intestinal epithelium; the presence of glucose facilitates the active transport of sodium, which in turn creates an osmotic gradient that promotes the absorption of water. This process remains functional even during most types of secretory diarrhea, making Fanolyte an effective therapy for restoring fluid and electrolyte balance and preventing severe dehydration.
