Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Orally-active DMT is a small molecule prodrug developed by Terran Biosciences for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a potent psychedelic compound that is typically inactive when ingested orally due to rapid degradation by monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) in the gut and liver. Terran's orally-active DMT is engineered as a prodrug to bypass this metabolic barrier, allowing for predictable systemic exposure and therapeutic psychedelic activity without the need for co-administration of MAO inhibitors. The drug acts primarily as an agonist at the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor, a mechanism shared by other classic psychedelics, to promote neuroplasticity and alleviate symptoms of depression and other mental health conditions.
