Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Orange peel extract is a plant-derived substance obtained from the dried and ground peel of the orange, primarily from Citrus sinensis or, less often, Citrus aurantium (bitter orange)[1][4][7]. It is rich in bioactive compounds such as polymethoxyflavonoids (including nobiletin, tangeretin, and sinensetin), phenolic acids, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), organic acids, essential oils (mainly limonene), and various minerals[1][2][3][4][8]. Mechanistically, orange peel extract exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. It has been shown to suppress UVB-induced COX-2 expression and PGE2 production in human keratinocytes via activation (agonism) of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ)[3]. Tradition and recent research attribute additional properties such as metabolic stimulation, digestive support, immune-enhancing effects, and possible use in skin conditioning[1][3][4]. Orange peel extract is primarily marketed as a dietary supplement, antioxidant source, cosmetic ingredient, and as an herbal remedy for conditions such as indigestion, metabolic stimulation, and cold/flu support. There are no pharmaceutical indications or regulatory drug approvals for orange peel extract as a monotherapy for specific diseases[1][5][7].
