OraPatch is a mucoadhesive delivery system designed for the topical administration of lidocaine to the oral mucosa. Developed by LecTec Corporation, the patch is engineered to adhere to the moist tissues of the mouth, providing localized anesthesia for dental procedures or symptomatic relief from painful oral conditions such as aphthous ulcers (canker sores). The patch functions by releasing lidocaine, which acts as a local anesthetic by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby blocking nerve conduction. Additionally, the physical presence of the patch serves as a protective barrier, shielding sensitive lesions from further irritation by food, drink, or tongue movement. The proprietary polymer technology allows for a controlled release of the anesthetic agent directly to the affected area over a sustained period.
