Overview
Orazamide (also known as AICA orotate) is an organic salt composed of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide (AICA) and orotic acid. It functions as a hepatoprotectant by serving as a metabolic precursor for purine and pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis, thereby promoting nucleic acid and protein synthesis and facilitating the regeneration of damaged hepatocytes. Orazamide is primarily indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic hepatitis, fatty liver (steatosis), liver cirrhosis, and the prevention of drug-induced liver injury (DILI), particularly that associated with anti-tuberculosis therapy. It has been developed and marketed by several companies, including Fujisawa, Labaz, and Hunan Zhongnan Pharmaceutical, and is available in oral formulations.
