Orbcel-C is a second-generation cell therapy consisting of CD362-enriched, umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Developed by Orbsen Therapeutics, the product is defined by the selection of cells expressing the Syndecan-2 (CD362) surface marker, which identifies a highly pure and potent population of MSCs compared to traditional plastic-adherent preparations. Orbcel-C is primarily being investigated for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), including cases triggered by COVID-19. The therapeutic mechanism involves the secretion of paracrine factors that modulate the host immune response, reduce the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, enhance the clearance of alveolar fluid, and promote the repair of the lung's epithelial and endothelial barriers. It is administered as a single intravenous infusion.
