Overview

Orciprenaline, also known as metaproterenol, is a synthetic amine and bronchodilator used primarily for the treatment of bronchospasm associated with asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other obstructive airway diseases. It acts as a moderately selective β2 adrenergic receptor agonist, stimulating receptors in the smooth muscle of the lungs, uterus, and vasculature supplying skeletal muscle. This stimulation leads to activation of adenylate cyclase and increased intracellular cAMP levels, resulting in relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and inhibition of immediate hypersensitivity mediator release from mast cells. Orciprenaline has minimal effect on alpha adrenergic receptors. It can be administered orally or by inhalation; oral bioavailability is about 40%. The drug is metabolized hepatically and in the gastrointestinal tract[1][3][5].
