Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Origanum syriacum extract is a plant-derived (botanical or herbal) extract prepared from the leaves or aerial parts of Origanum syriacum L., a shrubby medicinal plant native to the Mediterranean region and widely used in traditional medicine. The extract is a complex mixture of phytochemicals, rich in bioactive compounds such as carvacrol, thymol, flavonoids, and phenols, which contribute to its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. In preclinical research, various preparations of the extract (including aqueous, ethanolic, and methanolic extracts) have demonstrated antiproliferative, apoptotic, and anti-angiogenic activities against breast cancer (specifically triple-negative breast cancer cells) and leukemia. It has also shown amoebicidal activity against Acanthamoeba castellanii and antibacterial efficacy against multidrug-resistant wound pathogens. Furthermore, in animal models of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the extract has been shown to alleviate depressive-like phenotypes, reduce neuroinflammation, reverse hyperandrogenism, and improve ovarian cysts by modulating the neuroendocrine-inflammatory axis. There is currently no single active pharmaceutical ingredient or defined biological target, and no commercial developer has been identified.
