Overview

Ornithine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid naturally produced in the body. It plays a crucial role in the urea cycle, a vital metabolic pathway in the liver, where it facilitates the detoxification of ammonia, a potentially harmful byproduct of protein metabolism, by converting it into urea for safe excretion. Beyond its role in ammonia detoxification, Ornithine serves as a precursor for other important molecules such as arginine, citrulline, proline, glutamate, and polyamines, which are involved in various metabolic processes, cell division, DNA stability, tissue growth, and neurotransmitter function. It is widely utilized as a dietary supplement to support athletic performance, reduce fatigue, improve sleep quality, aid in wound healing, and promote liver health.
