ornithine oxoglutarate

Ornithine oxoglutarate (OKG) is a salt formed by the combination of two molecules of L-ornithine and one molecule of alpha-ketoglutarate. It functions as an anaplerotic agent and nutritional supplement, primarily investigated for its ability to replenish intermediates of the citric acid (Krebs) cycle and support the urea cycle. In metabolic disorders such as propionic acidemia, OKG acts as a precursor to alpha-ketoglutarate, helping to bypass metabolic blocks, reduce hyperammonemia, and spare endogenous glutamine. Beyond its investigational use in rare metabolic diseases, OKG has been utilized to improve nutritional status and promote recovery in burn patients and children receiving total parenteral nutrition.
