Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oroxyli semen refers to the dried mature seeds of Oroxylum indicum (木蝴蝶), a plant in the Bignoniaceae family. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is used for its properties of clearing lung heat, soothing the throat, relieving coughs and hoarseness, and harmonizing the liver and stomach. The main active constituents are flavonoids such as baicalein (黄芩苷元), chrysin (白杨素), oroxylin A glycosides (木蝴蝶苷A/B), apigenin derivatives, fatty oils (notably oleic acid at ~80%), and other phenolic compounds[4][5]. Pharmacological studies indicate anti-inflammatory, antitussive (cough-suppressing), expectorant, anti-allergic/anti-mutagenic effects; it also shows potential anticancer activity against certain cell lines[2][4][5]. Clinically in TCM it is mainly used for conditions like pharyngitis/tonsillitis ("喉痹"), hoarseness ("音哑"), cough due to lung heat ("肺热咳嗽"), liver-stomach qi pain ("肝胃气痛"), as well as adjunctively for cataract prevention[1][2][3][6]. It is typically administered orally as a decoction at doses of 1.5–3g per day[4][7].
