Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz, also known as the Indian trumpet tree, is a medicinal plant found in tropical countries like Thailand, India, and China. Extracts of Oroxylum indicum have been traditionally used for various ailments, including obesity, and have demonstrated in vitro inhibition of adipogenesis and lipase activity. A key active flavonoid compound isolated from Oroxylum indicum is Oroxylin A. Oroxylin A has been investigated for its diverse pharmacological activities, including its role as a cyclin-dependent kinase 9 (CDK9) inhibitor, which blocks mitophagy in hepatocellular carcinoma. It also shows synergistic inhibitory effects with 5-fluorouracil against hepatocellular carcinoma and suppresses the proliferation, migration, and invasion of human colorectal cancer cells by inhibiting the TGFβ-smad signaling pathway and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Additionally, Oroxylin A activates hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4a), which has been shown to reduce phosphatidylserine exposure in red blood cells in sickle cell disease.
