OrthoACI is an autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) cell therapy developed by Orthocell for the treatment of symptomatic articular cartilage defects in the knee and ankle. The therapeutic process involves harvesting a small biopsy of healthy cartilage from a non-weight-bearing area of the patient's joint. These cells are then isolated and expanded ex vivo in a specialized laboratory to produce a high-density population of chondrocytes. The expanded cells are subsequently re-implanted into the patient's cartilage defect, often under a collagen membrane, where they facilitate the regeneration of functional hyaline-like cartilage. This approach aims to restore joint function, reduce pain, and prevent the progression of osteoarthritis. OrthoACI is currently approved and commercially available in Australia.
