Overview

Orthosilicic acid (H4SiO4) is a small molecule compound and the primary bioavailable form of silicon for humans. In its natural state, it is highly unstable and prone to polymerization into insoluble silica gel; therefore, it is most commonly formulated as choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA) to maintain stability and bioavailability. Orthosilicic acid acts by stimulating the synthesis of type I collagen and promoting osteoblastic differentiation. It is primarily utilized in dietary supplements and has been investigated for therapeutic applications in bone health, specifically for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and osteopenia. Clinical studies have demonstrated its ability to increase markers of bone formation, such as procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (PINP), particularly when used as an adjunct to calcium and vitamin D3. Additionally, it is widely marketed for improving the structural integrity and appearance of skin, hair, and nails.
