Overview

Orthosiphon aristatus leaf, commonly known as Java tea or cat's whiskers, is a botanical herbal product derived from the *Orthosiphon aristatus* plant (family Lamiaceae). It contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including flavones (such as eupatorin and sinensetin), saponins, the glycoside orthosiphonin, rosmarinic acid, and high levels of potassium. The leaf extract is primarily recognized for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. It is traditionally used in Southeast Asian and European medicine for the treatment of various renal and urinary tract conditions, including cystitis, urethritis, and kidney stones, as well as for metabolic conditions like gout and hypertension. Mechanistically, the extract has demonstrated inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and lipoxygenase enzymes, which may contribute to its anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory effects. It is widely available as a therapeutic herbal tea, dietary supplement, and botanical reference material.
