Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oryzanol (commonly referred to as gamma-oryzanol or γ-oryzanol) is a mixture of ferulic acid esters of phytosterols and triterpenoids derived primarily from rice bran oil. The main constituents include cycloartenyl ferulate, 24-methylenecycloartanyl ferulate, and campesteryl ferulate[9]. Oryzanol has been used in Japan since the 1960s for menopausal symptoms, mild anxiety disorders, stomach upset (dyspepsia), and high cholesterol[7][9]. Its primary mechanism is believed to be the reduction of cholesterol absorption in the gut due to poor gastrointestinal absorption[1][2][8]. It also exhibits antioxidant properties and may have anti-inflammatory effects. While it is widely marketed as a dietary supplement for cholesterol management and sports performance enhancement (muscle growth/fatigue reduction), robust clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited[1][2][3][5][7]. Oryzanol is approved for several indications in Japan but not as a pharmaceutical drug in most other countries.
