Drug intelligence / Profile preview
OS-001 is an investigational extended-release oral formulation of levodopa and carbidopa developed by Osmotica Pharmaceutical for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It utilizes the proprietary Osmodex drug delivery system, which employs osmotic pressure to provide a controlled and consistent release of the active ingredients over an extended period. This formulation is designed to maintain more stable plasma concentrations of levodopa, aiming to reduce the 'off' periods and motor fluctuations (such as dyskinesia) that often occur with immediate-release levodopa therapy. Levodopa acts as a metabolic precursor to dopamine, crossing the blood-brain barrier to replenish depleted dopamine levels in the striatum. Carbidopa is a peripheral aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor that prevents the systemic conversion of levodopa to dopamine, thereby increasing the amount of levodopa available to the central nervous system and minimizing peripheral side effects like nausea.
