OS-1

OS-1 is an oral rehydration solution (ORS) developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, specifically formulated for the dietary management of dehydration. It is designed based on the physiological principles of the sodium-glucose cotransport system in the small intestine, which remains functional even during diarrheal illness. By providing a precise balance of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, and magnesium) and carbohydrates (glucose), OS-1 facilitates the rapid and efficient absorption of water and essential salts into the bloodstream. It is primarily indicated for patients suffering from mild-to-moderate dehydration caused by infectious enteritis, diarrhea, vomiting, high fever, or heatstroke, and is also used for fluid maintenance in elderly patients or those with inadequate oral intake. In Japan, it is classified as a Food for Special Dietary Use (Medical Food) and is a standard clinical recommendation for rehydration therapy.
