Overview

`os draconis preparata`, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as **Duan Long Gu**, is the calcined form of fossilized mammal bones, typically sourced from ancient species such as *Mastodon*, *Elephas*, and *Rhinoceros*. The "preparata" designation indicates that the raw fossilized bone has undergone a specific heat-treatment process (calcination) until it becomes red and brittle, a procedure intended to enhance its astringent properties and facilitate its reduction into a fine powder. Pharmacologically, it is composed primarily of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate, along with trace minerals like magnesium, iron, and aluminum. It is traditionally indicated for "anchoring and sedating" the spirit to treat anxiety, insomnia, and palpitations, as well as for its astringent capabilities to manage excessive sweating, spontaneous bleeding, and nocturnal emissions. Its therapeutic effects are attributed to the stabilization of neuronal membranes and the modulation of excitatory neurotransmission, although specific molecular protein targets are not typically defined in a conventional pharmaceutical sense.
