Overview

Osbond acid, also known as n-6 docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), is a long-chain polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid (22:5n-6). It is synthesized endogenously from arachidonic acid via elongation to adrenic acid followed by further desaturation and elongation steps. In human health and nutrition, osbond acid is most significant as a biochemical marker for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) status; because the same enzymes (delta-6 desaturase) are used to synthesize both DHA and osbond acid, the body increases osbond acid production when DHA levels are insufficient. Consequently, an elevated DHA-to-osbond acid ratio is often used to distinguish healthy dietary patterns from those deficient in omega-3 fatty acids. Research has investigated its associations with cognitive function, mood disorders like depression, and cardiometabolic risk factors, particularly in maternal and neonatal health.
