Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Osmolex ER is an extended-release oral tablet formulation of amantadine hydrochloride, developed by Adamas Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Supernus Pharmaceuticals). It is FDA-approved for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions in adult patients. The drug utilizes a specialized osmotic pump delivery system (Osmodex) consisting of an immediate-release outer layer and an extended-release core, which provides a consistent release profile throughout the day. While the exact mechanism of amantadine in treating Parkinson's disease is not fully elucidated, it is known to act as a weak non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, facilitate the release of dopamine, and inhibit dopamine reuptake, thereby helping to control motor symptoms such as stiffness, tremors, and dyskinesia.
