Overview

Osmotin is a plant-derived protein belonging to the pathogenesis-related (PR)-5 family, originally isolated from *Nicotiana tabacum*. It is a structural and functional homolog of the mammalian hormone adiponectin. Korea Pharma is developing Osmotin as a neuroprotective agent for the treatment of dementia, specifically Alzheimer's disease. The protein acts as an adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) agonist. By activating AdipoR1, it triggers downstream signaling pathways, such as the AMPK/SIRT1 axis, which reduce neuroinflammation, inhibit the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques, and prevent tau protein hyperphosphorylation. These actions collectively aim to mitigate neurodegeneration and cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease.
