Ostene

Ostene is a synthetic, water-soluble bone hemostasis material composed of alkylene oxide copolymers. Developed by Ceremed and marketed by Baxter Healthcare, it is designed to control bleeding from bone surfaces during surgical procedures, including cardiac, orthopedic, and neurosurgical operations. Unlike traditional bone wax, which is composed of beeswax and can interfere with bone healing, Ostene is non-thrombogenic and resorbs within 24 to 48 hours. This rapid resorption profile prevents the material from acting as a permanent foreign body, thereby reducing the risk of chronic inflammation or infection and allowing for natural osteogenesis. It functions primarily as a mechanical barrier that plugs the pores of cancellous bone to achieve immediate hemostasis.
