Overview

Osteo-P is a brand name that refers to different pharmaceutical products depending on the geographic region, most commonly identifying either alendronate sodium or a combination of calcium carbonate and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). As alendronate, it is a second-generation bisphosphonate that acts as a potent inhibitor of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption by targeting the enzyme farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase in the mevalonate pathway. This action increases bone mineral density and reduces fracture risk in patients with osteoporosis or Paget's disease. In other markets, such as the Philippines, Osteo-P is a widely used combination of calcium carbonate and vitamin D3, providing elemental calcium for bone mineralization and cholecalciferol to enhance intestinal calcium absorption via the vitamin D receptor. Both versions are primarily indicated for the management of osteoporosis and the prevention of bone density loss.
