OSU-2131 is an investigational peptide vaccine complex consisting of recombinant human heat shock protein 70 (rh-Hsc70) and a synthetic peptide (RAKFKQLL) derived from the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) BZLF1 protein. Developed by the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, it is administered with the saponin-based adjuvant QS-21 (Stimulon) to enhance immunogenicity. The vaccine is designed to prevent EBV infection and associated malignancies, such as post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), particularly in high-risk populations like solid organ transplant candidates who are undergoing immunosuppression. It works by priming the immune system to recognize and eliminate EBV-infected cells by targeting the BZLF1 early lytic protein, which is essential for the virus's transition from latency to replication.
