Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Osurnia is a veterinary topical gel formulation containing three active ingredients—**florfenicol** (an antibacterial), **terbinafine** (an antifungal), and **betamethasone acetate** (a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory activity)[2][4][5][7][8]. It is indicated **for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs**, specifically where infections are associated with susceptible strains of *Staphylococcus pseudintermedius* (bacteria) and *Malassezia pachydermatis* (yeast)[2][4][7][8]. Florfenicol acts as a bacteriostatic antibiotic by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal that selectively inhibits squalene epoxidase, blocking ergosterol synthesis and disrupting fungal cell membranes. Betamethasone acetate exerts anti-inflammatory effects by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, reducing swelling, itching, and discomfort in infected ear tissue. Osurnia is administered as a gel instilled directly into the dog's ear canal in a two-dose regimen (seven days apart), to maintain therapeutic concentrations at the infection site for up to 45 days[1][5][7].
