Overview

OT-730 is an investigational, oculoselective beta-blocker developed for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It is designed as a next-generation topical agent to lower intraocular pressure (IOP), the primary risk factor for glaucoma. Unlike traditional beta-blockers, OT-730 is engineered to have strong beta-blocking activity in the eye while being rapidly metabolized into inactive components upon entering systemic circulation, potentially reducing systemic side effects. Preclinical studies demonstrated that it has comparable IOP-lowering efficacy and superior systemic safety compared to timolol maleate, a widely used ocular beta-blocker. The drug was originally developed by Othera Pharmaceuticals and later acquired by QLT Inc., but clinical development was discontinued after phase II trials.[2][3][4][5][7]
