Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ov-GRN-1 is a recombinant granulin-like growth factor derived from the food-borne human liver fluke *Opisthorchis viverrini*. It is a potent mitogen that stimulates cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and wound healing. In the host, the parasite secretes Ov-GRN-1 to repair tissue damage in the bile ducts caused by its feeding activities; however, chronic exposure and repeated wounding/healing cycles promote a pro-tumorigenic microenvironment, leading to cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Ov-GRN-1 is being developed as a therapeutic wound-healing agent (including truncated peptide derivatives) and as an anti-pathogenesis vaccine candidate (both protein and mRNA-based formulations) to prevent liver fluke infection and associated bile duct cancer.
