Overview

Ova-loaded erythrocytes are an experimental therapeutic construct consisting of red blood cells (erythrocytes) encapsulated with the model protein ovalbumin (OVA). This system leverages the natural clearance pathways of aged or modified erythrocytes, which are sequestered by professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the liver and spleen. By delivering OVA directly to these APCs, the platform is used to study or induce specific immune responses. In research contexts, particularly those involving companies like ERYTECH Pharma or Anokion, this approach is investigated for inducing antigen-specific immune tolerance to treat autoimmune diseases or prevent anti-drug antibody formation. The erythrocytes act as a biocompatible delivery vehicle that protects the cargo from degradation and minimizes systemic exposure until uptake by the reticuloendothelial system.
